Abderrahmane Sissako
Abderrahmane Sissako is a Mauritanian film director and screenwriter celebrated for his poetic, politically engaged films exploring migration, identity, and social justice in Africa. Born in 1961 in Mauritania and raised partly in Mali, he studied filmmaking in Moscow before emerging as one of the leading voices in contemporary African cinema. His acclaimed works include Waiting for Happiness, Bamako, and Timbuktu, which received international acclaim and earned an Academy Award nomination for Best Foreign Language Film. Sissako’s films are known for their lyrical style, humanistic perspective, and thoughtful examination of political and cultural realities.
