Abdoulaye Ascofaré
Abdoulaye Ascofaré is a Malian filmmaker, poet, and screenwriter known for his contributions to African cinema. Born in Gao, Mali, in 1949, he studied theater and later filmmaking at the State Institute of Cinematography in Moscow before working as a radio host and teacher in Bamako. Ascofaré gained international recognition with his debut feature film, Faraw! Une mère des sables, a socially conscious drama set in the Sahel that won the Bayard d’Or for Artistic Creation at the Namur Film Festival. His work is noted for its poetic realism and focus on the everyday struggles of ordinary people in Mali.
