Albert Maysles

Albert Maysles (1926–2015) was an American documentary filmmaker and one of the pioneers of Direct Cinema, a style emphasizing observational filmmaking without narration or staged scenes. Born in Boston, Massachusetts, he initially studied psychology before turning to documentary work, later collaborating closely with his brother, David Maysles.The Maysles brothers gained recognition for influential films such as Grey Gardens, Salesman, and Gimme Shelter, which captured intimate, unfiltered portraits of real people and events. Albert Maysles’s work is celebrated for its empathy, immediacy, and groundbreaking approach to nonfiction storytelling.
