Aleksandar Petrović

Aleksandar "Saša" Petrović (1929–1994) was a Serbian filmmaker and one of the leading figures of the Yugoslav Black Wave. Born in Paris, he studied at the prestigious FAMU film school in post-war Prague before returning to Yugoslavia to make his first feature in 1961. His film I Even Met Happy Gypsies was a landmark work — the first feature in the Romani language and the first to depict Romani everyday life with a largely Romani cast, earning a Palme d'Or nomination at Cannes. He received two Academy Award nominations for Best Foreign Language Film, for Three and It Rains in My Village. Petrović's later adaptation of Bulgakov's The Master and Margarita and his refusal to bow to political pressure led to his dismissal from the Belgrade Film Academy in 1973.
