Alexander Hammid
Alexander Hammid was a Czech-born filmmaker, cinematographer, and photographer known for his influential work in avant-garde and experimental cinema. Born in 1907 as Alexander Hackenschmied, he became a prominent figure in European documentary filmmaking before emigrating to the United States during World War II. He is best known for co-directing the landmark experimental film Meshes of the Afternoon with his wife, Maya Deren, a work considered foundational to American avant-garde cinema. Hammid also worked extensively in documentary film and later contributed to educational and scientific filmmaking throughout his career.
