Andrzej Wajda

Andrzej Wajda was a renowned Polish film director and screenwriter born on March 6, 1926, in Suwałki, Poland. Widely regarded as one of the greatest filmmakers in European cinema, he became known for films that explored Poland’s history, war experiences, and political struggles. Wajda gained international recognition with works such as Ashes and Diamonds (1958), Man of Marble (1977), and Man of Iron (1981), the latter winning the Palme d’Or at the Cannes Film Festival. His films combined powerful storytelling with strong social and political commentary, making him a central figure in the Polish Film School movement. In 2000, Wajda received an honorary Academy Award for his lifetime contribution to cinema.
