Anne Fontaine

Anne Fontaine (born 1959) is a Luxembourgish-French filmmaker, screenwriter, and former actress whose work is often described as psychological drama. Born Anne-Fontaine Sibertin-Blanc in Luxembourg, she spent her early childhood in Lisbon — where her father served as cathedral organist — before moving to Paris in adolescence to study dance and philosophy. Her first feature as solo director, Les Histoires d'amour finissent mal... en général, won the 1993 Prix Jean Vigo, and she made her name with the 1997 success Dry Cleaning (Nettoyage à Sec), which took Best Screenplay at Venice. Her best-known work internationally is Coco Before Chanel (2009), the biographical drama starring Audrey Tautou as the young Gabrielle Chanel. Her films probe what their characters cannot quite admit to themselves, working — as she has put it — on their blind side.
