Bille August
Bille August (born 1948) is a Danish filmmaker, screenwriter, and cinematographer, one of only ten directors to have won the Palme d'Or twice. He trained at Stockholm's Foto- och Dokumentärskolan and the National Film School of Denmark and worked widely as a cinematographer before turning to directing. His Pelle the Conqueror (1987), an adaptation of Martin Andersen Nexø's novel about Swedish migrants in late-19th-century Denmark, won the Palme d'Or, the Golden Globe, and the Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film. He took a second Palme d'Or in 1992 for The Best Intentions, written by Ingmar Bergman from his parents' courtship. His later international filmography includes The House of the Spirits, Smilla's Sense of Snow, Les Misérables, Night Train to Lisbon, and A Fortunate Man. He is a Knight of the Order of the Dannebrog.
