Bódy Gábor
Gábor Bódy (1946–1985) was a Hungarian filmmaker, theorist, and avant-garde organiser regarded as one of the most important figures of late-twentieth-century Hungarian cinema. Born in Budapest, he studied history and philosophy at Loránd Eötvös University before turning to film at the Academy of Theatre and Film Arts, and became a leading force at the legendary Béla Balázs Studio, founding the Film Language Series in 1973 and the K/3 experimental group in 1976. His feature American Torso (1975) and the sprawling Narcissus and Psyche (1980) — the largest-scale Hungarian production of its era, adapted from a Sándor Weöres novel — are surrealist, philosophical works full of visual experimentation. He died under disputed circumstances in 1985, officially ruled a suicide; documents released in 2001 indicated he had been an informant for the Hungarian secret police between 1973 and 1983.
