Brian Gibson

Brian Gibson (1944–2004) was a British film and television director best remembered for the Tina Turner biopic What's Love Got to Do With It (1993). Born in Southend-on-Sea and educated in medicine at St Catharine's College, Cambridge, he joined the BBC in the late 1960s and directed scientific documentaries for Horizon before turning to drama. He won a BAFTA for Best Director for the 1979 BBC film Blue Remembered Hills with Helen Mirren, and made his feature debut with Breaking Glass (1980). He directed Poltergeist II (1986), won a Primetime Emmy and Directors Guild award for the HBO film The Josephine Baker Story (1991), and earned Angela Bassett and Laurence Fishburne their Oscar nominations for What's Love Got to Do With It. He also directed The Juror (1996) and the British rock comedy Still Crazy (1998). He died of cancer at fifty-nine.
