Bruce Beresford

Bruce Beresford (born 1940) is an Australian film and opera director, screenwriter, and producer whose career bridges the Australian New Wave and Hollywood. A graduate of the University of Sydney, he served as Film Officer for the British Film Institute Production Board between 1966 and 1971 before returning to Australia, where he played a leading role in reviving its film industry with The Adventures of Barry McKenzie, Don's Party, and the Boer War court-martial drama Breaker Morant (1980) — which earned him an Academy Award nomination for Best Adapted Screenplay. The acclaim led him to direct Tender Mercies (1983) in the United States, the Horton Foote-scripted drama for which Robert Duvall won the Best Actor Oscar and Beresford a Best Director nomination. His Driving Miss Daisy (1989) won Best Picture. Across more than thirty features he has remained a flexible craftsman drawn to actor-driven material.
