Carlos Carrera

Carlos Carrera (born 1962) is a Mexican filmmaker who has worked across animation, documentary, television, and feature film. He made his feature debut in the 1990s, but his international breakthrough was the controversial The Crime of Father Amaro (El crimen del Padre Amaro, 2002) — loosely based on Eça de Queiroz's 19th-century Portuguese novel and starring Gael García Bernal as a young priest drawn into corruption and sexual transgression in a small Mexican parish. Denounced by the Catholic Church in Mexico, the film became the highest-grossing Mexican film of its time and was nominated for the Academy Award and the Golden Globe for Best Foreign Language Film, winning nineteen of the more than thirty international prizes it was nominated for. He has continued to direct features, television, and animated work, and is regarded as one of Mexico's most versatile filmmakers.
