Leopold Jessner

Leopold Jessner was a German theater and film director born on March 3, 1878, in Königsberg, Germany (now Kaliningrad, Russia). He became one of the leading figures of German Expressionist theater during the early 20th century, known for his bold staging techniques and politically engaged productions. Jessner also directed several silent films in the 1920s, bringing his expressionist visual style to cinema. As director of the Prussian State Theater in Berlin, he played an important role in modernizing German theater. Because of his Jewish background and progressive political views, he left Germany after the rise of the Nazi regime and later settled in the United States, where he died in 1945.
