About

In the Street is an American experimental documentary filmed in Spanish Harlem, New York City, in 1945–1946. Created by photographer Helen Levitt in collaboration with painter and photographer Janice Loeb and writer James Agee, the film transforms everyday urban life into an intimate visual portrait of a working-class neighborhood. Without a conventional plot or explanatory narration, the film observes the everyday activities unfolding on New York’s sidewalks and stoops. Children play, dance, imitate adults, make faces, and invent spontaneous games; shopkeepers sweep their storefronts, neighbors converse, and passersby move through the crowded streets. Levitt’s film extends her celebrated street photography into the moving image. Using small 16mm cameras, the filmmakers capture unposed gestures and fleeting expressions, often filming discreetly to preserve the spontaneity of their subjects. The camera does not impose a predetermined narrative; instead, it discovers moments of visual and emotional significance within the ordinary flow of daily life.
