About

Atlantics is a 2019 internationally co-produced supernatural romantic drama film directed by Mati Diop, in her feature directorial debut. It was selected to compete for the Palme d'Or at the 2019 Cannes Film Festival. Diop made history when the film premiered at Cannes, becoming the first Black woman to direct a film featured in competition at the festival. Working mostly with unknown actors, Diop focused in the film on issues such as the refugee crisis, remorse, loss, grief, class struggle, and taking responsibility (or not) for one's actions. In a suburb of Dakar, Senegal, 17-year-old Ada is in love with Souleiman, a construction worker she plans to marry. But Ada has been promised to another man, Omar, in an arranged marriage. Souleiman and other young construction workers leave Senegal by boat, hoping to reach Spain and find better opportunities. Days later, strange events begin: the girls of Dakar develop an eerie, almost supernatural presence, and the men who had disappeared seem to return in unexpected ways. Ada becomes caught between her obligations, her love for Souleiman, and a mysterious force connected to the young migrants who vanished at sea. The film gradually shifts from a realistic story about love, migration, and economic inequality into a supernatural ghost story. At its heart, Atlantics is about the people left behind—their grief, desire, anger, and longing—and how the absent can continue to haunt those who remain. (source: wikipedia)
