About

Atom Egoyan’s 1999 psychological thriller Felicia’s Journey, adapted from William Trevor's novel, follows a pregnant, penniless Irish teenager named Felicia who travels to Birmingham to find the British soldier who abandoned her. There, she accepts help from Joseph Ambrose Hilditch, a seemingly kind catering supervisor who is secretly a repressed, psychopathic serial killer. The film blends past and present, introducing unique cinematic choices—such as Hilditch obsessively replaying video tapes of his mother's old cooking shows—to heighten the suspense. While the producers forced Egoyan to keep the story's original English setting rather than moving it to Canada, he successfully infused the plot with Hitchockian suspense and dark humor. Backed by highly acclaimed performances from newcomer Elaine Cassidy and a restrained Bob Hoskins, the film opened the 1999 Toronto International Film Festival and went on to win four Genie Awards, including Best Adapted Screenplay and Best Lead Actor.
