About

In Our Time is a 1982 Taiwanese anthology film directed by Edward Yang, Yi Chang, Ko I-chen and Tao Te-Chen. Each set in a different decade between 1950 and 1980. This anthology is considered to be the film which started the Taiwanese New Wave movement 1. Edward Yang: Little Dragon Head (29 minutes) A shy boy named Hsiao-mao feels ignored by his parents and bullied at school, finding comfort only in his beloved dinosaur toy. After his father throws the toy away, a young girl helps him recover it from a garbage dump, creating a brief friendship that brings him happiness and inspiration. However, the girl soon leaves with her family, and their reunion remains uncertain. 2. Tao Te-chen: Expectation (29 minutes) Set in 1960s Taiwan, Expectation follows Hsiao-fang, a teenage girl who experiences her first romantic feelings while living with a university student boarding in her family home. As she navigates love, jealousy, and emotional growth, the film also reflects the era's changing society, shaped by modernization, American pop culture, and emerging youth culture. 3. Ko I-chen: Leapfrog (31 minutes) Fatty, a philosophy student unhappy with his future, starts an international student club while falling for his neighbor, Ms. Chang. Unexpectedly competing in a campus relay, he wins after a rival makes a crucial mistake, earning admiration from his classmates and a heartfelt gesture from Ms. Chang. 4. Chang Yi: Say Your Name (21 minutes) A young couple's first day in their new apartment turns into a series of comic misunderstandings when the husband accidentally locks himself outside wearing only a towel. As both struggle to reunite, mistaken identities and unhelpful neighbors complicate matters until the wife returns with the key, bringing the chaos to an end.
