Underwater Love
About
Underwater Love is an unusual fusion of Japan's pinku eiga (erotic cinema) tradition, musical comedy, and supernatural fantasy. Its deliberately eccentric tone, stylized choreography, and dreamlike premise challenge conventional genre boundaries. Christopher Doyle's expressive cinematography further enhances the film's vivid, playful visual character. Asuka, a woman in her thirties who works at a lakeside fish factory, is preparing to marry her boss, Taki, when she encounters a kappa, a fantastical water creature from Japanese folklore. She discovers that the creature is Aoki, her first love, who drowned during their adolescence and has returned in supernatural form. When a personification of Death reveals that Asuka's life is in danger, Aoki attempts to change her fate by taking her to the mythical village of the kappa. Their reunion unfolds through a series of surreal encounters, erotic episodes, and exuberant musical numbers.
