Alain Tanner

Alain Tanner (1929–2022) was a Swiss film director and screenwriter known for his key role in the development of modern Swiss cinema and his association with the European art film movement of the 1960s and 1970s. Born in Geneva, he initially worked in film production in London before returning to Switzerland to co-found the Groupe 5 collective, which helped establish a national film industry.Tanner gained international recognition with films such as Charles, Dead or Alive and Jonah Who Will Be 25 in the Year 2000, both of which reflect his interest in social critique, political idealism, and personal freedom. His work is characterized by a reflective, humanist style and a focus on contemporary European society.
