Andrew Bujalski

Andrew Bujalski (born 1977) is an American filmmaker and screenwriter widely regarded as a key figure in the emergence of the Mumblecore movement. Born in Boston, Massachusetts, he studied film at Harvard University and later attended the University of Texas at Austin, where he began developing his distinctive approach to independent filmmaking. His early films, including Funny Ha Ha (2002), Mutual Appreciation (2005), and Beeswax (2009), are marked by naturalistic performances, understated humor, improvised or loosely scripted dialogue, and an intimate focus on relationships and everyday uncertainty. Bujalski has continued to experiment beyond the conventions of Mumblecore. His films Computer Chess (2013), Results (2015), and Support the Girls (2018) combine low-key comedy with formal experimentation and social observation. Computer Chess, shot in black-and-white on vintage video, received particular acclaim for its inventive recreation of an early-1980s computer-chess tournament.
