About

Funny Ha Ha is the first film of the Mumblecore film movement. Shot on 16mm and released in 2002, the film is modest in form and deceptively simple in construction, yet its distinctive rhythms, elliptical exchanges, and subtle emotional undercurrents give it an unusual depth—one that reveals itself increasingly with repeated viewings. At twenty-three, Marnie drifts through the uncertain terrain of early adulthood, seemingly in search of romance, employment, or perhaps simply a way to avoid committing herself to either. As she moves among a loose circle of friends, former acquaintances, and potential lovers, each struggling to find direction after college, Marnie attempts to maintain her humor and composure amid the confusion. With its unhurried pace, awkward encounters, and finely observed social nuances, Funny Ha Ha captures the peculiar mixture of aimlessness and possibility that defines this transitional period of life.
