Anthony Chen

Anthony Chen (born 1984) is a Singaporean writer-director who put Singaporean cinema on the international map with his debut feature Ilo Ilo (2013), which won the Caméra d'Or at Cannes — the first Singaporean film ever to take a prize there. He studied at Ngee Ann Polytechnic's School of Film and Media Studies and, after his national service, at the UK's National Film and Television School, graduating in 2010. Drawing on his own childhood in Singapore, Ilo Ilo follows a middle-class family during the 1997 Asian financial crisis and their relationship with their Filipina domestic worker; the film also won three Golden Horse Awards. His second feature, Wet Season (2019), reunited him with Yeo Yann Yann and Koh Jia Ler and premiered at Toronto. He was invited to join the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences in 2023.
