Baran bo Odar
Baran bo Odar (born 1978) is a Swiss-born German filmmaker best known for co-creating the time-travel mystery series Dark with his creative and romantic partner Jantje Friese. He studied directing at the University of Television and Film Munich, and his feature debut The Silence (2010) premiered on the Piazza Grande at Locarno and earned him a place on Variety's Ten Directors to Watch. His hacker thriller Who Am I — No System Is Safe (2014) topped the German box office and was nominated for the German Film Award for Best Picture and Best Screenplay. He directed his first American feature, the Jamie Foxx action thriller Sleepless, in 2017, the same year Dark — Netflix's first German-language original series — began its three-season run, for which Odar won Germany's Grimme-Preis in 2018. He and Friese followed it with the Netflix mystery 1899 in 2022.
