Barmak Akram

Barmak Akram (born 1966) is an Afghan-French filmmaker, visual artist, and composer based in Paris, where he studied fine arts after leaving Kabul. He works across documentary, experimental film, and narrative features. His debut feature Kabuli Kid (2008), about a Kabul taxi driver who finds an abandoned infant in his back seat, premiered in Venice and won the Best Debut prize at the Fajr International Film Festival. His second feature, Wajma (An Afghan Love Story), won the World Cinema Dramatic Screenwriting Award at the Sundance Film Festival in 2013. His work draws on contemporary Afghan life and its tensions between tradition and modernity.
