Shyam Benegal

Shyam Benegal (1934–2024) was one of India’s most influential filmmakers and a leading figure of the Indian New Wave cinema. Born in Hyderabad, he began his career in advertising before moving into filmmaking and directing documentaries. His acclaimed films, including Ankur, Nishant, Manthan, Bhumika, Junoon, and Mandi, explored social issues, class, gender, and rural life. Benegal also made important contributions to television, most notably the landmark historical series Bharat Ek Khoj. His career earned him numerous National Film Awards, the Padma Shri, the Padma Bhushan, and the Dadasaheb Phalke Award for his contribution to Indian cinema.
