Tony Gatlif
Tony Gatlif (1948-2026) is a French director, screenwriter, and composer of Algerian Roma descent whose work has been devoted, over many decades, to portraying Roma communities across Europe and beyond. He turned to film in the 1970s and gradually developed a hybrid style mixing fiction, documentary, music performance, and travelogue, often centred on music as a vehicle for collective memory and survival. His acclaimed films include Princes, Latcho Drom, Gadjo Dilo, Vengo, Exiles, and Korkoro. The 2004 film Exils won the Best Director Award at the 2004 Cannes Film Festival. His film Transylvania also premiered at Cannes in May 2006. He died in Arles, France on 2 September 2026, at the age of 77.
