Yasuzo Masumura
Yasuzo Masumura was a Japanese film director born on August 25, 1924, in Kofu, Japan. He became one of the most innovative and provocative filmmakers of postwar Japanese cinema, known for his energetic visual style and sharp critiques of social conformity, obsession, and modern life. After studying filmmaking in Italy at the Centro Sperimentale di Cinematografia under Michelangelo Antonioni, Federico Fellini and Luchino Visconti, Masumura directed acclaimed films such as Giants and Toys (1958), Manji (1964), and Red Angel (1966). Though sometimes overshadowed internationally by directors like Akira Kurosawa and Yasujiro Ozu, Masumura is now recognized as one of the key figures in modern Japanese cinema.
