Zhang Yimou

Zhang Yimou is a Chinese film director, producer, and cinematographer born on April 2, 1950, in Xi’an, China. He emerged as a leading figure of China’s Fifth Generation filmmakers during the 1980s and gained international acclaim for visually striking films that explore history, culture, and human emotion. Zhang directed celebrated works such as Red Sorghum (1987), Raise the Red Lantern (1991), Hero (2002), and House of Flying Daggers (2004). Known for his masterful use of color, composition, and epic storytelling, he has become one of the most influential directors in world cinema. Zhang also directed the opening and closing ceremonies of the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games.
