The film follows four contestants—Hameed Sakhizada, Setara Hussainzada, Rafi Naabzada, and Lema Sahar—competing on Afghanistan’s popular reality singing competition. The show brings music back into everyday life after the Taliban’s restrictions on entertainment and becomes a major source of excitement for Afghans across ethnic and regional divisions. The documentary focuses especially on Setara Hussainzada, whose final performance causes controversy when she dances freely without her hijab. Her actions are condemned by conservative communities, leading to death threats and forcing her to return home. Lema Sahar, the other female contestant, is also eliminated before the finale, highlighting the challenges women face in Afghan society. The final round is between Rafi Naabzada, from war-affected northern Afghanistan, and Hameed Sakhizada, an ethnic Hazara who promotes unity through his music. Rafi ultimately wins the competition. Through the contestants’ experiences, Afghan Star explores freedom of expression, sexism, ethnic divisions, and the hopes of Afghans for peace and unity.
