El Bola tells the story of Pablo, a 12-year-old boy growing up in a poor neighborhood of Madrid under the constant abuse of his violent father. Isolated and unhappy at home, Pablo’s life begins to change when he befriends Alfredo, a new student at school. Through Alfredo and his warm, supportive family, Pablo experiences a sense of safety and affection he has never known before. As Alfredo’s parents become aware of the bruises and violence Pablo endures, they seek help from a social worker in hopes of finding him a safer and more stable environment. Produced in association with UNICEF, the film explores childhood trauma, friendship, and the possibility of escape from abuse.
