The Mystery of Oberwald is a 1980 Italian–German television drama film directed by Michelangelo Antonioni and starring Monica Vitti, Paolo Bonacelli, and Franco Branciaroli. It is based on the 1946 play L'Aigle à deux têtes by Jean Cocteau. The story follows a reclusive queen who has lived in mourning since her husband’s assassination ten years earlier. When the radical poet Sebastian breaks into her castle intending to kill her, she discovers that he resembles her late husband and secretly protects him. She disguises him as her new reader, and the two soon fall in love. Sebastian encourages the queen to return to the capital and reclaim her authority, but the ambitious Count von Foehn tries to stop him by threatening to expose him as a fugitive. Sebastian refuses to betray the queen and takes poison. In a final confrontation, the queen falsely claims that she has betrayed Sebastian, causing him to shoot her in anger. As she dies, she reveals that the betrayal was a lie meant to make him fulfill his promise to kill her. She confesses that she still loves him, and Sebastian dies beside her. (source: wikipedia)
