About

Jan Dara is an important work of the Thai New Wave, adapted from the controversial Thai novel The Story of Jan Dara by Utsana Phleungtham. The film explores sexual repression, family dysfunction, abuse, and the destructive legacy of inherited trauma. Set in 1930s Siam, Jan Dara chronicles the troubled upbringing of a boy born into a wealthy but profoundly dysfunctional family. Held responsible by his abusive stepfather, Khun Luang, for his mother’s death in childbirth, Jan grows up in an atmosphere of sexual exploitation, jealousy, and emotional cruelty. As he enters adulthood, he becomes ensnared in destructive relationships, increasingly reproducing the patterns of sexual excess and domination that have defined his formative years. His quest to uncover the truth about his origins ultimately becomes an attempt to confront the deep-seated traumas and inherited corruption that perpetuate his family’s cycle of abuse.
