Next To Kin
About
Atom Egoyan's debut feature, Next of Kin is a psychological drama about identity, alienation, and the desire for belonging. Frustrated by his emotionally distant family, twenty-three-year-old Peter Foster attends a family therapy session, where he discovers a videotape documenting the experiences of an Armenian-Canadian family whose son was adopted. Fascinated by their story, Peter assumes the identity of their biological son and gradually inserts himself into their lives. As he becomes increasingly involved with his unsuspecting surrogate family, the film explores the fluidity of identity, the construction of familial bonds, and the human longing for emotional connection. Characterized by restrained performances, meticulous compositions, and an understated sense of irony, Next of Kin establishes themes and stylistic concerns that would become central to Egoyan’s later work.
