About
Princess Yang Kwei Fei is a 1955 historical film directed by Kenji Mizoguchi. It is one of Mizoguchi's two colour films, the other being Tales of the Taira Clan, made the same year. The story follows Emperor Xuanzong of the Tang dynasty and his tragic love for Yang Guifei. After losing his wife, Xuanzong becomes depressed and withdraws from government. He eventually falls deeply in love with Yang Guifei, a beautiful woman from the Yang family who resembles his late empress. As she gains his favor, her family becomes powerful and wealthy, leading to corruption, high taxes, and growing anger among the people. Yang Guifei realizes that her family's influence is harming the emperor and the empire. She asks Xuanzong to remove her family from power and offers to leave him, but he refuses and banishes her. Meanwhile, General An Lushan, angry over being denied political power, leads a rebellion against the emperor and blames the Yang family for the empire's problems. As the rebellion spreads, Xuanzong and Yang Guifei flee the capital together. The Imperial Guards demand Yang Guifei's death as the price for their continued loyalty to the emperor. Heartbroken, Xuanzong is forced to authorize her execution. The rebellion is eventually defeated, but Xuanzong loses his throne and lives the rest of his life grieving for Yang Guifei. In the end, he dies alone, comforted by the thought that death will reunite him with his beloved. (source: wikipedia)
