About
Set in Shanghai before and after the Second Sino-Japanese War, the story follows Gwok-man, a nightclub clown who joins the army out of patriotic conviction. During a Japanese air raid, he meets a young girl, Aak-syu, while taking shelter beneath Suzhou Bridge. The two fall in love and promise to meet there again after the war. Ten years later, Gwok-man returns to Shanghai searching for Aak-syu, while she has become a dance hostess at a nightclub. Neither realizes that they have crossed paths again, and their lives become entangled with Dang-zai, a naive newcomer who moves into Aak-syu's room and develops unrequited feelings for Gwok-man. Meanwhile, Gwok-man finds success when his song “Shanghai Blues” becomes a hit. A series of comic misunderstandings, romantic complications, and chaotic incidents gradually bring Gwok-man and Aak-syu closer. Eventually, during a power outage and a farcical night at the nightclub, they finally recognize each other as the lovers who made their wartime promise years earlier. Realizing that Dang-zai also loves Gwok-man, Aak-syu decides to leave Shanghai. Gwok-man catches up with her before her train departs, and the two reunite and leave together. Heartbroken but accepting their choice, Dang-zai walks away alone, only to encounter a young woman who strangely resembles her, ending the story on a playful and ambiguous note.(source: wikipedia)
