About

Italian director Alberto Lattuada brings a distinctly European sensibility to The Overcoat, a classic tale by Nikolai Gogol that many regard as one of Lattuada’s finest psychological works. Comedian Renato Rascel stars as an unremarkable clerk who spends his entire savings on an elegant overcoat. The garment transforms his social standing almost overnight, seemingly confirming that appearances shape perception. However, his newfound confidence is shattered when the coat is stolen. Expanding on Gogol’s story, the film introduces several memorable characters, including an image-conscious small-town mayor portrayed by Giulio Stival. Bianca Lattuada, the director's sister was one of the production managers and his father, Felice Lattuada, composed the music.
