About
Widow Hatsuko runs a successful tayū (highest class of courtesans) house in Kyoto while secretly having an affair with Matoba, a young doctor who works for the courtesan guild. When Hatsuko’s daughter Yukiko returns from Tokyo after a suicide attempt, Matoba begins developing feelings for her. Yukiko is deeply ashamed of her mother’s profession because it caused her boyfriend’s family to reject her, leading to her suicide attempt. However, after helping at the tayū house, Yukiko begins to understand and sympathize with the women who work there, realizing that many are driven by difficult circumstances. Meanwhile, Matoba dreams of moving to Tokyo and opening his own medical practice. Hatsuko, afraid of losing him, secretly borrows one million yen from Harada, a longtime admirer, to establish a clinic for Matoba in Kyoto and convince him to stay. When Yukiko discovers that Matoba accepted the money while planning to leave with her for Tokyo, she feels betrayed and ends their relationship. In the end, Yukiko chooses to remain in Kyoto and follow in her mother’s footsteps, becoming the proprietress of the tayū house. (source: wikipedia)
