About

The film is the third installment in Angelopoulos's Trilogy of Silence, following Voyage to Cythera (1984) and The Beekeeper (1986). Eleven-year-old Voula and her five-year-old brother Alexander run away from home in search of the father they believe is waiting for them in Germany. Their journey takes them across Greece, where they encounter a traveling theater troupe led by Orestes, who briefly becomes their protector. After a series of encounters, separations, and dangers, the children continue north alone. They board a final train toward the border, then escape across a river by boat. As a gunshot breaks the silence, they cling to each other in the darkness, holding onto the hope of reaching the light.
