About
The Family (released as Malavita and Cosa Nostra in some countries) is a 2013 crime thriller film co-written and directed by Luc Besson, starring Robert De Niro, Michelle Pfeiffer, Tommy Lee Jones, Dianna Agron and John D'Leo. A co-production between France and the United States, the film follows a Mafia family in the witness protection program who want to change their lives. It is based on the 2004 novel Malavita (Badfellas) by French author Tonino Benacquista. Giovanni Manzoni, a former Mafia boss, enters the FBI witness protection program with his wife Maggie and their children, Warren and Belle, after betraying crime boss Don Luchese. The family relocates to a quiet village in Normandy, France, where they struggle to adapt to normal life while hiding their true identities. Despite trying to blend in, each family member falls back on their criminal instincts—Giovanni violently deals with corrupt locals, Maggie blows up a grocery store after being insulted, Warren creates a Mafia-style organization at school, and Belle begins a romance with a local teacher. Their cover is eventually compromised when Warren unknowingly reveals a clue to their location, allowing Don Luchese to send hitmen after them. As Giovanni prepares to relocate again, the assassins attack the town, destroying the family's home and killing several innocent people. Working together with FBI agent Robert Stansfield, the Manzonis fight back and eliminate the attackers using their criminal skills. After surviving the assault, the family is moved to another secret location, where Giovanni reflects that sharing his story and facing danger together has brought his family closer.
