About
The Lady is a 2011 British biographical film directed by Luc Besson, starring Michelle Yeoh as Aung San Suu Kyi and David Thewlis as her late husband Michael Aris. The story follows Aung San Suu Kyi, the daughter of Burmese independence leader Aung San, who is assassinated in 1947 shortly after helping Burma gain independence. Decades later, in 1988, Suu Kyi returns from England to care for her sick mother and witnesses the military's violent suppression of the pro-democracy 8888 Uprising. Inspired by the courage of the Burmese people and her father's legacy, she becomes a leading figure in the fight for democracy. Suu Kyi founds the National League for Democracy (NLD), which wins the 1990 general election. However, the military refuses to recognize the results and places her under house arrest for many years while separating her from her husband and children. Her husband, Michael Aris, campaigns internationally for her release and helps bring global attention to her cause, leading to her being awarded the Nobel Peace Prize, which her family accepts on her behalf. When the military offers her the chance to visit her dying husband in exchange for leaving Burma, she refuses because she knows she would not be allowed to return. Despite her personal sacrifices and the loss of her husband, Suu Kyi remains committed to the struggle for democracy and continues to inspire her supporters from under house arrest.
