About

The Princess (Hungarian: Adj király katonát!) is a 1983 Hungarian drama film directed by Pál Erdőss. It won the Caméra d'Or at the 1983 Cannes Film Festival, and the Golden Leopard at the 1983 Locarno International Film Festival. The film belongs to the Budapest School documentary-fiction tradition, utilizing improvised dialogue and chronicling vulnerable youth. A 16-year-old orphaned state-ward named Jutka leaves her rural village for Budapest alongside her friend Zsuzsa to work in a textile factory. Jutka lives in a workers' hostel and works the night shift, initially relishing her newfound independence until the realities of adult life and her friend's pregnancy overwhelm them.
