Mistletoes
About
Mistletoes (Fagyöngyök) is a highly regarded Hungarian docudrama that continues director Judit Ember’s intimate exploration of the life of Nóra Szabó, the protagonist of her earlier documentary Tantörténet (An Instructive Story, 1975). Returning to Nóra years later, Ember finds a woman whose troubled youth, marked by a suicide attempt in which she jumped from a fourth-floor window, has given way to the difficult realities of adulthood. Now an unmarried mother of two, and pregnant with her third child, Nóra lives in circumstances that echo those of her own mother, who likewise raised her children within a closed, predominantly female community. The arrival of Jenő, an energetic and determined laborer and the father of Nóra’s unborn child, begins to disrupt this insular way of life. His presence introduces the possibility of change, challenging the patterns of isolation and dependency that have shaped the women’s lives across generations.
