Cséplő Gyuri
About
A pioneering work of the "Budapest School" of documentary filmmaking, Cséplő Gyuri follows Gyuri Cséplő, an ambitious 23-year-old Romani man from Zala County, as he tries to escape poverty by moving to Budapest for work. Gyuri leaves his segregated village settlement with two companions (his brother and a friend) to seek a better life and employment in the capital. In Budapest, the young men face immediate cultural and systemic barriers. While Gyuri manages to secure a job and accommodation at a workers' hostel, his illiterate companions are turned away and return home to the village. Left alone, Gyuri works diligently, takes up construction labor, and attempts to pursue education. However, he confronts deep social discrimination, isolation, and the dead-end realities faced by day-laborers in 1970s socialist Hungary. Unable to fully assimilate or find true acceptance in the urban environment, Gyuri temporarily returns to his family and friends, only to realize he can no longer fit back into the extreme poverty of his old life. The film concludes with his complex, unresolved struggle as he heads back toward the city.
